Stories identified by Rapole Ramkumar Bharadwaj- Ayurvedic knowledge of Vellapus

Rapole Ramkumar Bharadwaj is a young man with a lot of interest on the family history of yellapus. He tried to give me a lot of inputs relating to caste history.Basing on that this article is written. His introduction in his own words is as below
" Rapole Ram kumar Bharadwaj" Son of Sri Rapole Hanmantha Rao of Vemnoor. My grand father Late Sri Vital Rao of Vemnoor. In telugu " Vema" means great or royal. And I want to write regarding village of Rapole. Now it is in Parigi Mandal, District Rangareddy(Rangareddy district is divided from Hyderabad). it means Rapole families migrated from hyderabad to karimanagar and Rayalaseema.”

Here what I comment is that Yellapus, especially Rapole families migrated from the Rayalaseema area to karimnagar district via Hyderabad. After a sevior famine in the Bonagiri village many families migrated from there.Yellapus migrated via Hyderabad to karimnagar.

He also provided the information on the villages of Hyderabad existing in the lower maner dam as follows: Another villages "Madhapur and Kondapur of Rangareddy district(Hitech city area)", Same name villages in behind " Lower Maner Dam". Thota families and other families are natives of these villages. Puppalaguda village: Puppla families may migrated from old Hyderabad. This also support our community lived in deccan area. Puppalaguda village is in Rajendranagar Mandal, near manikonda,Rangareddy district, andhra pradesh.

He has also thrown light on on the Rapole villages as follows: 1)Raipole village - Ibrahimpatnam mandal- Rangareddy District. 2)Rapole village - Parigi mandal - Rangareddy District. 3)Raipole/Rayapole village - Daultabad mandal - Medak District. It reveals two or three things. One, the migratory route from Bongir to Karimnagar is from Hyederabad and medak district. Even now there is presence of yellapus in medak district. Two, the yellapus were present in Hyderabad long ago. In the recent past, Hazaris of Golkonda has come in to contact with me.

His greatest contribution for the yellapu community than what his elder rapole family members contributed is Identiying a plant name on yellapu community as follows: Vellapula” plant is a shrub. Edible fruit & medicinal plant using by tribal’s of Anamalai hills, western Ghats, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. Scientific name: Euphorbiaceae Securinega virosa (Roxb. ex Willd.).Its collecting season is summer.

Later I have searched on the similar lines and found two more plants on our family name.
 1.Plant-Altternanthera Tenella(L) colla

 Family-Amaranthaceae
Local name-Vellaponnankanni
Habit-Herb
Collecting season-Rainy
Meaning of this plant is the precious plant for maidens found by vellapu community. It has proved that anti viral and anti microbial properties.Such plant is definitely very much useful to fight against many unknown viral and microbial born ailments. It is not out of place to mention that many tribals die due to such ailments.
2.Plant-Cleome monophylla L

Family- Capparidaceae
 Local name-Vellai
 Habit-Herb
Collecting season-Rainy
3.Plant-Rugosa Lam

Family-Rhamnaceae
 Local name-kottai
 Habit-Shrub
Collecting season-Rainy
Kottai or kotte is a famous surname in yellapu community. It again proves that plant is existing on the surname also, as is in the case of villages existing both on family names and caste names.

The following things can be deducted from the above plant names on the Yellapu community as follows:

  1. Yellapus were very frequently using these plants or propogated the use of them among the tribal locals during their stay in that area.
  2. Once again it proved that Yellapus were there in Tamilnadu area. It proves that yellapu ancestors were experts in using the herbs and ayurvedic scientists. It has percolated to the the generation of my Grand father also.later it was neglected.
  3.  It also reveals their tribal relations even in the new areas where migrated newly in the areas like Tamilnadu. In this connection it is pertinent to mention that yellapus had close relations with tribals like koyas, lambadas, etc.
  4.  There are Ayurvedic plant names on villages, cities, hills, etc.Aurvedic pplant on the name of a community is seen for the first time in my experience.
  5. There are villages, hills, etc are existing on the caste name of yellapus or family names, but it revealed a plant names on community.
  6. An interesting person can identify many new things and contribute to the history of community.

Hence, I thank Sri.Rapole Ramkumar Bharadwaj for identifying the new things and feeling community proud.

Story of Dadi /dade families

The dadi families are part of yellapu community and in kapus it is corrupted as dade.It is well aware that yellapus are migrated from Rajasthan to U.P and later U.P to Jharkhand and subsequently Jharkhand to M.P. consequently M.P to Maharastra and Maharastra to A.P.

I have verified whether atleast some families would give the clue of migration right from the Rajasthan. The hindhi worded or some tribe names would provide the same information.Initially I have searched the name of the dadi villages existing in different states. The search has provided the wonderful information of migratory route of dadi families. It is almost coinciding with the accepted migratory route of Yellapus with little variations. The living place of dadi families are naturally living place of other yellapu families in same villages or in the neighboring villages.

The information of such villages are as follows: • Dadi village located in the Sojat tehsil of Pali district in Rajasthan. The near by villages of this village are Ramasani sandwan,Ramasaniwala.Ramasani is a famous surname among kapus in suryapet mandal. This shows that these families lived in neighbouring areas.

 • KOUSHA DADI VILLAGE is in India / Uttar Pradesh / Bhagwantnagar . • amirhna the dadi village is in India / Uttar Pradesh / Saidpur / Coordinates: 25°37'8"N 83°11'22"E Nearby cities: Ghazipur main city, Varanasi, Mughalsarai

 • Dadi is a Village in Simaria Tehsil in Chatra District in Jharkhand State in India . Dadi is 18.1 km distance from its District Main City Chatra . And 87 km distance from its State Main City Ranchi . Other villages in Simaria Tehsil are Bagra , Banasadi , Banhe , Chope , Dadi , Hurnali , Near By towns are Pathalgada(13.5 k.m.) ,Chatra(18.1 k.m.) ,Lawalong(19.9 k.m.) ,Giddhor(20.4 k.m.) ,

 • Bhitardadi Dadi village of Keruwaungri panchayat in Jharkhand.

 • Villages close to Dadi are Bambadi, Besingsahi, Bilabadi, Bondaguda, Dalabali, Dudukargam, Gargadi,Gindapanga, Gunjigam, Gutu Salaguda, Jiridikia, Kanibidikia, Magodangia, Midiaganda Jungle,Nahudumaha, Sasimaha, Tala Kangerikia, Tala Sasimaha, Upper Kangerikia, .It is in phulbani district in odisha.

 • Dadi is a village in the tehsil/mandal of Churchu in the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. • Dadi is a village in the tehsil/mandal of Mawai in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. • Dadi village in Nagpur district in Maharastra state.

 • Dadi a Village of Tehsil Maihar, Satna, Madhya Pradesh, India • Dadi is a small village located in the district of Kandhamal in the state of Orissa in India. It has a population of about 245 persons living in around 59 households.

 • There is presence of dadi village in north-east states also.Dadi is a small village located in the district of Upper Subansiri in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. It has a population of about 60 persons living in around 15 households.

 • The information is also available outside India also.Dadi (Persian: ددي‎, also Romanized as Dadī)[1] is a village in Byaban Rural District, Byaban District, Minab County, Hormozgan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 76, in 17 families.[2] The information of dadi the kings of basudevpur, bhadrak,(Basudebpur) Orissa is available to us.This clears two things.one , dadi families were migrated to Orissa also, in variation to the accepted route.Otherwise, elderly people would have forgotten the odisha in their route.

So it clearly indicates that dadi families have been with Yellapu families since Rajasthan days.

Story told by Jangal KrishnamohanRao

Sri.Krishnamohanrao is a practicing Advocate at Nirmal town in adilabad district. He has his own residential building there in Nirmal. He also started practicing in the Hon’ble Highcourt at Hyderabad. He wanted to contribute to the Yellapu Charitha since long time.He narrated their own story with the help of his father.I want similar contributions from many corners.

The surname of jangal has come from the name of land grant given by the Nizam namely sanath-e-Jangal In Bhuthkur village and other 5 villages includes Gollagudem,Rampur, part of devunigudem and part of dasturabad. The dasturabad allocation was cancelled and allotted to others after independence.

The sanath-e-jangil lands are given as watan to develop the fallow lands into fertile lands, there by developinng the agriculture. Also to have control in the far off and interior areas through their watandars. The sanctioning to hindhus is to take them to their fold and to mitigate the dissatisfaction among the local population.

In this instant case the Buthkur village is near to elagadapa, where the khas lands were present. Khas lands are owned by the king and all the grains produced would be sent to king for his use. Thus , we can presume that lands were given for development and consolidation of power only.

The wathandari succession is as follows: first it was given to pullaiah@pullarao,Ramarao,Muthyamrao and lastly by Ramgopal rao.Sri.Ramgopalrao is father of Krishnamohanrao.Krishnamohan rao has two sons namely vynatheya and Karthikeya.

He also told that one branch of his family was migrated to Warangal.Their family name has corrupted to Jangili.Their gotra   is palakula.I remember that one of their family member has misunderstood the meaning of Jangili and changed his surname all the way.I presume that there is no such position if he knows the right meaning.

They are the ardent devotees of Nallagonda Narasimhaswamy. The temple is originally in the deep forest on a kalleda hill.In the month of Shravana & Bhadrapada months, the huge gathering of 20 villages assemble here for fair. The utsava vigraham is placed in dasturabad.Sri.Ramgopalrao has gifted 2acres and 20 guntas land to temple maintenance and priests. It reveals their liberal mentality and charity.

I personally thank sri.Krisnamohan garu for providing the information.

Vyshya relations of Yellapus

Vyshyas are integral part of Yellapu families since Rajasthan days. Basically, yellapus are warrior community providing safety to many other communities, in addition to participating in wars. Vyshyas are also one such community, which require the safety to their products/material and them. This safety use to be provided by the yellapus. Also some yellapus also did business.

As per the opinion of elders of yellapu community, they married the vyshya girls in olden days. They preferred to have meals in the vyshya families than velamas and reddys.Interestingly, some yellapus people were vegetarians till recent decade, supporting my view. Also these people are closely connected with Vyshyas.

Here, I am dealing the historical relations between yellapus and vyshyas and the reasons for relations and the rationality behind it is as follows:

It was already told that Anabheri is corrupt form of Ranabheri. It is a drum like instrument used during the war to terrify the enemies and it is also used to indicate the starting the war. Here, we can find the Bhairu shetty families in yellapus. It is a corrupt form of Bherishetty. It indicates that their profession is to sell the Bheris. Here, I want to deduce two things. Anabheri families are end users of Bheris. The sellers of Bheris were also along with them in the form of Bherishetties. As per Micheal Katten, Bhairushetty (Bheri Komati) men were out during the Bobbili war on business engagement. It clarifies that they were continuing their business. Bheri Komati women during the war has killed about 200 soldiers using the stones in special way. It is discussed in the caste and in North coastal area that yellapu women are skilled in warfare. Especially, it is told in case of Anabheri women. Hence, the women of Anabheri families may be also present along with Bheri Komati sthris during the war of Bobbili. Micheal Kattam might not mention the Anabheri sthris, due to unable to distinguish between Bheri Komati sthris and Anabheri sthris. It may be at the time of gathering the information.

There are Basa families in yellapu community. They might take a Oath during the war. It may require some special items, which is again to be supplied by Vyshyas only. Hence, there are Bashetty families in yellapus. It may be corrupt form of Basa shetty. The materials sold by Bashetty families to Basa families are not known.

There are Dadi and Dadishetty families in yellapus. Dadi families played vital role in community right from North to down south in Tamilnadu. There are many villages on the names of Dadi families / family members. They also played vital role during kakatiyas. To that effect inscriptions are also available. During the Vijayanagara also they played vital role. It is clarified by the village names on their families in south also. The Dadi shetty families may be following the Dadi families from the North. They might be also supplying the war material, requirements etc., to all the Dadi families.

There are puram and puram shetty families. Puram means town in Sanskrit. When the people of same community living in town and rural areas, Puram surname is given to town people. The business people in town get the surname of puramshetty.

There are Ramneni and Ramshetty families in yellapus. Ramshetty is famous surname in Rajasthan. Hence, both these families would have migrated from Rajasthan. Ramneni families are feudatories of kings and Ramshetty families are business persons and may be suppliers to Ramneni families. However, as per the evidences available, the Ramshetty families are also able warriors. It is proved in the unofficial war between Bandalalingapur Samsthan and Metpally. One Ramshetty Venkanna (famous as Jamedar Venkanna) fought against Metpally forces valiantly and forced them to retreat, while later was trying to take over lands, as per the court orders. Healso played very vital role in the administration of samsthan.

We also here about chetty and shetty families. Shetty families are business people of North. Where as chetty families are business people in the Sourth, especially in Tamilnadu. There is one chettykulam village in Tirunalvelvi District near Avaraikulam and Vellakulam villages, revealing the influence of chetti families in that village.

There are no conclusive proofs of doing business by some families such as Akula, Lakkakula and chinthapandu families. But comparatively these people are intelligent and money saving. I have also observed the Polishetty, Bolishetty and Kolishetty families in the Telagas in Nalgonda and Coastal area. The Polineni family is also observed in same community in same areas. Hence, all the evidences prove that Vyshyas are very much part of yellapu families and they have maintained matrimonial relations too from times immemorial. If we count the Gavaras as sub-caste of Vyshyas, the relations further increases. But the Gavara relations are separately dealt in a separate blog.

On analysis of gotras of the vyshyas, the following similar gotras can be found in both the castes of yellapus and vyshyas are as follows:

1.Kashyapa
2.Bharadwaja
3.Kausika
4.Vasista
5.Srivatsasa
6.Suvarna

On analysis of Sankethanamams of Vyshya community we will find some more similar Gotras in the both communities as follows:

1.Janakula
2.Thirumala
3.Palakula
4.Chandakula

On analysis of sankethanamams of vyshyas ,we can find two surnames of yellapu community as follows:
1.Betha shrestakula( Bethi)
2.Byrusistakula( Byrushetti)

The analysis of sankethnamam of vyshas had revealed an astonishing things that it consists of yelasistakula or velasistakula, who might be merged from yellapu/ vellapu families, beyond any doubt that yellapus were also called yelladhulipulu( as per Dr.V.S.Rao).

Hence, it is very clear that yellapus and Vyshyas  had very close relations from the historical period.
